With GMO: a half of Ukrainian soy is genetically modified (video)

On November 2nd, at a press conference in Kyiv, the results of the research were presented. They show that almost 50% of Ukrainian soy is genetically modified, writes “Agro-Center”.

Representatives of the Ukrainian Association “Dunayskaya Soy” and the Romanian Association “Agent Green” were present at the conference. Samples of soy from six Ukrainian regions – Poltavsky, Khmelnytsky, Kyivsky, Kropivnitsky, Zhytomyrsky, Vinnytsky – were selected for the research. These regions account for a half of Ukrainian soy production.

“We chose six regions of Ukraine, which make up more than 50% in the overall structure of soy production. We selected ten samples from ten different fields in each region. Twenty-nine of the sixty samples were contaminated,”

said Gabriel Paun, President of the Association “Agent Green”.

The analysis of the samples was carried out in the Austrian laboratory Umweltbundesamt.

“We sent the results for confirmation. Austrian scientists said samples were not polluted accidentally. These are GMO-varieties grown on the territory of Ukraine,”

said Oksana Prosolenko, head of the regional office of the “Dunayskaya Soy” Association in Ukraine.

According to Oksana Prosolenko, such results are not just disappointing but a direct evidence of a violation of Ukrainian legislation. After all, cultivation of genetically modified products in Ukraine is illegal. Thus, 50% of the Ukrainian soy market is illegal.

Gabriel Paun added that the issue of regulating GMO products should be resolved by 2019 at the latest. According to agreements with the EU, Ukraine has committed itself to implement 15 EU legal acts concerning testing, registration, placing on the market, control, coexistence and transboundary movement of genetically modified organisms.
