Unprofitable gardens: the price for Ukrainian apples decreased four times

The price for Ukrainian apples has decreased four times during the last nine seasons, writes Agro-Center with reference to the Ukrainian Fruit and Vegetable Association.

In the 2007/08 season, the average selling price for an apple was almost a dollar per kilogram.  Last year the average price was slightly less than $0.25/kg. Farmers’ revenues from 1 kg of grown products decreased four times during the nine seasons:

“During the current season, prices have somewhat equalized (to $0.39), due to abnormal losses of apple crops in the EU because of a late frost in the spring of 2017. However, in the 2018/19 season, the price may break an anti-record of the previous season, and fall below 25 cents,” reported a representative of the association.

According to experts, at such a price, investments in modern apple orchards will not pay off at all. In order to increase the profitability of domestic apples, they advise to open new export markets and unite in cooperatives.
