Hotels for Bees Are Being Built in Spain

Environmentalists, hoteliers and a nougat brand teamed up to bring to life a project that aims to protect bees by creating a haven for these insects. Hotel Pou de la Neu in Gijon (Alicante) became the first hotel to join the project. A bee house was built there in early December, writes “Agro-Center”.

The “Friends of Bees” Foundation, the Institute of Hotel Technology, and the nougat production company “Picio Turronera” organized the project.

The organizers are willing to send mini-hotels for bees abroad for free to all institutions that wish to support the project. They note that more than 75% of the food produced by humans is dependent on pollination by bees. Therefore, a reduction in the bee population poses risks to all of humanity.

Negative trends that affect pollinator-insects populations include mass deforestation, uncontrolled use of pesticides, or the absence of safe breeding grounds.

“70% of bee species typically dig small holes where they can grow their offsprings. We started building shelters for insects that offer a place for rest and breeding for different types of pollinators,”

said the organizers.

The Pou de la Neu Hotel is located in the natural area, close to the Picio Turronera’s office. The company relies on bees for pollination of their almond trees.

“Without almond trees and honey, there would be no nougat, one of our cultural and gastronomic traditions. It’s just a small example of how things can change if we lose our bees,”

said Ana Pico, head of the Quality Department.
