The world’s largest plant for growing insects started its work in the Netherlands

The world’s largest company engaged in growing insects for protein opened in the Netherlands. Experts believe insects might be the future of food, writes “Agro-Center”.

King Willem-Alexander opened one of the most modern insect breeding farms in the Dutch city of Bergen op Zoom.

At the company’s Protix plant, insects are grown and processed in accordance with the latest technology. The final product is protein for animal fodders. Products are exported to many countries, including in Germany.

The plant in Bergen op Zoom is the world’s first mega plant for insect breeding, where raw materials are processed immediately into fodder.

The company intends to work on the principle of a circular economy: the remains of plant food are processed into food for insects, while insects form a protein-rich material for feeding animals.

In the EU, fodders made from insects are allowed in fish farming and in the pet food industry only. However, it is expected that in the near future the product will be allowed in pig and poultry farming.
