Chinese farmers grow strawberries in alkaline soils
In the Chinese city of Shache, located in the Xinjiang-Uyghur autonomous region, farmers harvest strawberries grown on acidic soils. In Xinjiang, soils are mostly alkaline, which greatly complicates the development of agriculture and the economy in the region, writes “Agro-Center” with a reference to zerno-ua.
Farmers who grow strawberries in greenhouses in the village of Keshilake decided to conduct a soil experiment. They reduced the level of alkalinity by 70% and increased the content of organic substances by 50%, significantly improving the quality of the soil.
In general, Xinjiang is a good place to grow fruits, in particular, due to a large number of sunny days and a temperature difference during seasons. Although, strawberries are not as widespread here as other berries and fruits and, therefore, expensive.
Now, however, the inhabitants of Keshilake can enjoy eating strawberries as well as sell them, increasing their incomes.
