Agrochemicals Found at the Bottom of the Black Sea

During a joint expedition of Ukrainian and Georgian experts to the Black Sea, mercury and agrochemicals banned in the EU were discovered at the bottom. The full results of the research will appear in the future, writes “Agro-Center”.

20 scientists from Ukraine, Georgia and the European Union are taking part in the expedition. With the help of modern equipment, they plan to analyze tens of thousands of water indicators even at a depth of 2 km.

In the course of the research, scientists discovered chemicals in the water that have been banned in the EU for several decades.

“For example, herbicides used in agriculture can kill all plants that live at the bottom of the sea. Insecticides used by humans against mosquitoes can kill zooplankton in the sea,”

warned Yaroslav Slobodnik, the head of the environmental project.

Scientists suggest that the chemicals could get into the Black Sea from farmland through sewage and heavy rainfall. During the previous expedition, scientists found almost twice as much rubbish per square meter in the Black Sea than in the Mediterranean. 80% of it is plastic.
