Unique broiler lambs are grown at the Askania-Nova reserve
Scientists at the Institute of Animal Husbandry in the Kherson region breed Ascanian lambs according to a broiler technology, writes “Agro-Center”.
“We have already received the second generation of wonderful genotypes, which feel great in the south of Ukraine”
said Yuriy Vdovichenko, Director of the Institute of Animal Husbandry of the steppe areas “Askania-Nova”.
The new breed is created by crossing the genotypes of three meat breeds: two foreign and one Ukrainian, Askanian breed.
It is expected that at the time of slaughter, a carcass of a 6-8 months old lamb will weigh 20 kg. This is a standard at the international market and must be taken into account during the development of technology.
The technology helps sheep gain weight rapidly, while their meat remains tender. The result is a broiler lamb. The demand for the product is high.
The technology’s advantage is that it allows limited use of pastures. It is convenient since there are no free pastures in the Kherson region. There are not enough all over the world.
