Two New High-Yielding Banana Varieties Were Created in Turkey
Research and development experts at the ALATA Research Institute of Horticulture have developed new varieties of bananas that have higher productivity per area unit. According to experts, the new varieties allow to increase the yield of banana plants on plantations from 6 tons per acre to 10 tons, writes “Agro-Center”.
Bananas make a significant contribution to Turkey’s economy. Therefore, the Ministry of Agriculture often supports special projects that aim to improve this culture. Two new banana varieties (Grand Nain and Alata Azman) were recently patented.
Associate Professor Davut Keles, Head of the ALATA Research Institute of Horticulture, explained that the Institute’s staff regularly conducts research in the areas of vegetables, fruits, ornamental plants, and beekeeping. The purpose of scientific work is to promote the development of agriculture in the country.
Project Manager Dr. Mustafa Unlu noted that scientists were focused on productivity and quality. The new varieties yield 10 tons compared to 6 tons in the same conditions and without sacrificing taste characteristics.
At the end of the year, the seedlings will be available to farmers and sold with a blue certificate. The blue certificate indicates that the production of the varieties has been supported by the Turkish Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.
